Jumpseat Etiquette

Jumpseating is a privilege—not a right. All pilots are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism when exercising jumpseat privileges. Please review and follow the guidelines below.

Dress Code

  • Acceptable attire includes uniform, business, or business casual.
  • Jeans, sneakers, and sandals are not permitted. These are considered unprofessional.
  • Facial hair is generally not permitted, in accordance with most airline policies.
  • Remember: jumpseating is not the same as non-revenue travel—higher standards apply.

Jumpseat Availability & Priority

  • Jumpseat access is typically first come, first served, though most airlines give priority to their own crewmembers.
  • When cabin seats are available, multiple jumpseaters may be accommodated.
  • In accordance with FARs, the Captain has final authority on whether a jumpseater is approved.

Check-In Procedures

  • Procedures vary by airline—always verify in advance.
  • Arrive early to allow sufficient time for check-in at the ticket counter or gate.
  • Familiarize yourself with each airline’s policies before requesting a jumpseat.

Professional Conduct

  • Maintain professionalism at all times.
  • Be courteous and respectful to gate agents and operations personnel.
  • Do not argue with airline staff from another carrier regarding jumpseat access.
  • Always request the Captain’s permission and express gratitude—even if you receive a cabin seat.
    • Before boarding:
  • Leave your bags on the jet bridge while you introduce yourself to the captain.
  • Request permission from the flight attendant to enter the flight deck.
  • Introduce yourself to the Captain.
  • Present your Airline ID, Certificate, and Medical.
  • Never bypass the cockpit without speaking to the Captain, even if directed to board.
  • Identify yourself to the flight attendants as a jumpseater—you are considered an additional crewmember.
    • If denied jumpseat access: Thank the Captain and exit respectfully.
    • Do not question or debate their decision.
  • Drinking alcohol while jumpseating is not permitted.
  • Upon arrival, always thank the crew, regardless of time constraints.

Reporting Issues

  • If you believe an issue occurred, contact the TAPA Jumpseat Committee at: tapajumpseat@21air.us
  • Concerns will be addressed through the appropriate professional channels.

Remember: This privilege can be revoked if misused.
